The objectives of this set of roleplays is to help native speakers of other languages develop communicative competence in English. The roleplays are not intended to take the place of the classroom text; rather they are meant to be used in addition to the regular curriculum. By communicative competence, we mean not only knowledge of the linguistic forms of the language but also a knowledge of when, how, and to whom it is appropriate to use these forms. To that purpose, the table of contents is also organized according to a multitude of various speech acts such as complaining, giving advice, expressing anger, etc. The roleplays have been arranged in an approximate order of difficulty so that the later roleplays demand a higher level of proficiency than do the earlier ones.
