Blue Ridge Shadows by Julia Nunnally Duncan is a collection of fifteen short stories set in the rural Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. These stories are skillfully woven into an emotional landscape of the region, with effects of poverty and economic blight never far from the surface. The stories are of proud and indpendent people facing difficult times in the best way they can. They deal with the rural South with great impact and effectiveness. Without resorting to stereotypes, Duncan's stories show the psychological effect of isolation and poverty and on people, particularly women. These are stories that will linger in the memory.

Julia Nunnally Duncan’s background is a rural one. She grew up and still lives in a small agricultural and textile community in the foothills of Western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Having spent much time as a child in the local hosiery mills where her parents worked, playing on stacks of socks and fiddling with her father’s fixing tools, she well knows the atmosphere of small town textile life. Her roots also link to East Tennessee, near the Kentucky border, from her father’s family, who were coal miners and lumber workers. Duncan’s publication credits include dozens of stories and poems in literary journals including, among others, Writers’ Forum, Now and Then, and Appalachian Heritage. Her awards include a Blumenthal Writers & Readers Series Award and being a featured reader in the NC Writers at Home Series. Having earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson College Program for Writers, Duncan has taught creative writing at Warren Wilson College, Asheville Writers’ Workshop, and McDowell Technical Community College, where she is currently employed. She shares a rural home with husband Steve and daughter Annie.
