The photo-murals with which this book is concerned are a major feature of the museum, magnificently displayed in a 16 foot high exhibit extending 500 feet along one wall of the museum.

Dan, a career employee with the National Park Service and first supervisor for the museum, became personally caught up in the drama of the Lewis and Clark journals while serving at Jefferson National Expansion Memorial during the installation of the photo-murals.
David Muench, leading landscape photographer, brings to these pages a keen sensitivity to nature and an artist's instinct for mood and lighting. Commissioned by the National Park Service to commemorate photographically the epic journey of Lewis and Clark, David spent nearly a year in this pursuit.
