Lincoln Borglum, content to stay in the shadow of his famous father, Rushmore's sculptor Gutzon Borglum, was the steady influence that kept the day-to-day construction work going on the mountain, enabling the sculptor to devote his time to creative aspects of the carving. Thus Lincoln was more responsible for its successful completion than is commonly realized. Gutzon had taught him his art well, and ever since Lincoln was a toddler, his father had kept him at his side. So it was not surprising that his son emerged as his "right arm" on the project that was to astound the world. Lincoln Borglum was a noted sculptor in his own right and received many commissions before his death on January 27, 1986.
