Smallwood was present at the execution of outlaw Edgar J. Watson, suspected of murdering several area residents and the subject of Peter Mathiessen's best-selling trilogy of books "Killing Mr. Watson," "Lost Man's River" and "Bone by Bone."

About the Author:

Charlton W. Tebeau (1904-2000) served 32 years as a professor of history at the University of Miami, and dedicated 23 years as chairman of the History Department. He was one of the organizers of the Historical Association of Southern Florida and editor of its journal, Tequesta, for many years. In 1990, the Charlton W. Tebeau Chair in American History was established at the University of Miami in his honor.
