Text: English, Swedish (translation)
Grade 2-4 --After the disappearance of her beloved angora cat, Eva suspects her neighbor Roland of foul play when she spots a similarly colored hat in his house filled with hunting trophies. She steals her dead-cat-turned-hat from Roland's house for a proper burial, but later discovers that the hat was 100% Orlon, and not her feline. The first-person narrative, translated from the Swedish, is slow and has a tendency to meander, although Eva's predicament and overactive imagination do produce moments of humor. The text is copiously illustrated with primitive, cartoonlike watercolors that seem intended for a younger audience. Eva's sensitive concern for her cat and distaste for hunting are oddly juxtaposed with her ideas of revenge on Roland. Libraries looking for humorous easy fiction should stick with standbys such as Greenwald's "Rosy Cole" series (Little), Fleischman's "McBroom" books (Little), or Hurwitz' series about Nora, Aldo, and Russell (Morrow). --Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI
