Reviews

Now in its 11th year, The Pushcart Prize has become an institution; readers look forward to its annual appearance as children do to Christmas. The work remains topnotch, thanks to both the contributors (almost 50 this time, many of them unknown) and the rotating editorial staff; Philip Levine and David Wojahn served as poetry editors this year. This rotation means that the work included is always as fresh as it is good; thus, a girl in a story by Amy Hempel gives her brother "a look you could iron clothes with with," and the dead father in Li-Young Lee's poem lies down "to sleep like a snow-covered road/ winding through pines older than him,/ without any travelers, and lonely for no one." These authors are not only our finest storytellers but the guardians of our language. David Kirby, English Dept., Florida State Univ., Tallahassee
