Review:
Leida Rigel is a Russian hematologist researching shamanistic healing rituals, incantations that cause blood to take on life and movement independent of its host's body. Blackmailed by the KGB who kidnap her son Ilya, Rigel reluctantly joins a Western organization know as The Enterprise. 'Me Enterprise schemes to match her scientific discoveries with the apocalyptic religion of Father Averyan, who preaches "die revelation of the miracle of resurrection on Judgment Day." The result is a goldmine called The Judgement Day Archive: For $3,000 and one drop of blood, anyone can be cloned back into existence after death. Each Client of Christ also deposits an account of his or her life-a $150-per-hour confessional--to be reckoned with on Judgement Day. Despite its ingenious plot twists and surreal flavor, Soviet dmigrd Moscovit's [Igor Efiniov) novel is about as difficult to follow as the career of Mata Hari and not nearly as stimulating. Adding to the reader's confusion is a stilted, plodding translation by Robert Bowie. Moscovite's most memorable character is Leida Rigel, beautiful, proud, and determined not to compromise what she loves. The integrity that ultimately allows her to defeat her enemies is here described by her lover: "How could I help remembering you? Your face back then, at the track. It was like on some fresco not totally destroyed. You know, sometimes you see old, seriously damaged murals or frescoes. Everything cracking to bits, the plaster peeling away and in just one little spot there's a figure or a vase or a handabsolutely undernaged, ideally preserved.... Among all that mob of people you were the only one with a fare like thatundemolished, still whole." Mark Fox's jacket design and illustration-a close-up of a man staring out at the reader-emphasize the theme of spies and being spied upon. -- From Independent Publisher
