Grade 9 Up For young adults deciding on military enlistment, this could be a useful source. Bradley clearly explains military options, salaries, types of duty, and the process of enlisting. He also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of military service. The bottom line is that the armed forces are ``service,'' and Bradley makes no bones about the fact that others have control over a person's life there and that ``people in uniform get injuredsometimes disabled for lifeand killed.'' He also stresses that recruits are affecting eight years of their lives between active and reserve duty time, which should be carefully considered. A poorly named but otherwise informative chapter called ``How to Get Out'' covers honorable and dishonorable discharges, special conditions for discharge, and places to contact for military counseling. The section on women in the military focuses on some plusses but mostly problems for the female in the armed forces. One chapter, ``Blacks in the Military,'' seems particularly unnecessary, especially as the problems of other minorities are not addressed anywhere. Other helpful guides are Texe W. Marrs' You and the Armed Forces (Arco, 1983; o.p.) and Robert McKay's Planning Your Military Career (VGM Career Horizons/National Textbook Company, 1984; o.p.), but they lack the currency of Bradley's book.
