Chock-full of color photographs from her own collection, Mildred Seeley's Victorian Doll Secrets uncovers the well-hidden "secrets" of the wonderful French and German dolls from the nineteenth century. The renowned doll collector invites you to join her in a study of original doll costumes with an emphasis on the underclothing.
Discover all the fine seams, tiny stitches and elaborate handwork oftentimes hidden by period costumes. Also included are the step-by-step methods of cleaning, mending and general preservation of underclothing, as well as a study in white fabrics used in the 1800s. Patterns and projects are included for a child's stay, one-piece teddy and more. This exposure of "Victorian Secrets" will prove helpful in recostuming old dolls and aiding reproduction dollmakers in deciding what goes where, how it should look and what materials to use.
Mildred Seeley has been creating and collecting dolls for nearly 40 years. Also holding a Master's degree in Art Education, Mildred is considered a noted authority on dollmaking, antique doll appraising and doll photography. She has written numerous books on creating and collecting dolls as well as founding the well-known Doll Artisan Guild. With the exception of one, all the dolls featured in this book belong to the Seeley's collection.
