This work, edited by authors from the World Resources Institute, brings a welcome change in focus to the analysis of Latin America. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate the importance of resource management and its consequences for U.S.-Latin American relations and economic and political change in the region. The contributions are well-written and lucid, but integration between the editors' overriding ecological themes and the nine case studies is missing. This criticism notwithstanding, the book provides helpful insights into the region's ecology and serves as a useful sourcebook of data. Recommended primarily for academic collections. Roderic A.
