YA-- Fogle, a Washington historian, recalls stories of the people who have made this city an international one. Although the many footnotes give proof of extensive research, the incidents she recounts are not those usually found in traditional history books. Some of the social anecdotes related might once have been gossip but are now verified by facts. All are very readable and bring colorful people to life. Each of the four chronologically arranged chapters opens with a short summary of the events of an era and their influence on Washington life. While the line drawings of people and homes add interest, and the detailed index will help students doing research, the fun comes from reading the entire book. h-27
