Modern historians of the Middle Ages have begun to embrace archaeology in the study of material culture. This collection was developed from papers presented at the Sixteenth International Congress on Medieval Studies in order to form such a discourse between history and archaeology. These essays are a celebration of interdisciplinary coherence, and serve as a call to action, emphasizing the need for active participation of different disciplines in formulating questions about and interpretations of material culture in the Middle Ages (from the introduction).
