ea. vol: illus. by Marita Johnson. 31p. index. (First Cookbook Library Series). CIP. Gareth Stevens. Oct. 1985. PLB $11.95. Grade 3-6 These two books are intended for children beginning to cook alone with adult help only for those things involving handling hot dishes, ovens or slicing. Getting Ready to Cook covers the basic food groups, measuring correctly and includes labeled pictures of basic equipment and an illustrated glossary of cooking terms. Recipes for a milkshake, a salad, tuna casserole and a dessert are included with a list of equipment needed, ingredients and step-by-step illustrations of the preparation. Illustrations are clear and simple and will be of great help to the child. One Dish Meals uses the same format to show how to make 13 recipes, including the same recipe for tuna casserole that was in Getting Ready to Cook . Other recipes include macaroni and cheese, baked meatballs and a chicken casserole. There is a minor error: a fork is described while a rubber scraper is pictured. However, these attractive and colorful books with clear directions will be useful additions to the children's cooking shelf. Carole B. Kirkpatrick, North Auburn Elementary Sch . , Wash.
