A personal journey of discovery, a portrait and a history of the human presence in the Arctic. Voices in Stone is not only an account of the discovery of archaeological materials in the High Arctic, but a story of life in remote, isolated research camps occasionally threatened by sudden, violent storms or curious polar bears.

Born in Denmark, Peter Schledermann emigrated at the age of 17 to New York, where he spent four years in the advertising business before heading for a different wilderness - Alaska. There he homesteaded near fairbanks and eventually began his northern studies at the University of Alaska. Life in Alaska sparked an interest in Arctic anthropology and human ecology that led to more than 25 years of archaeological field research in Alaska, Canada and Greenland. SInce 1978, most of his fieldwork has taken place on the central east coast of Ellesmere Island. Peter Schledermann is an adjunct professor of archaeology at the University of Calgary and a former executive director of the Arctic Institute of North America.
"Schledermann elegantly weaves together dramatic experiences from fieldwork under harsh conditions, personal feelings and considerations as an explorer of the Arctic past....as exciting as a novel." -- Bjarne Gronnow, Historical - Archaeological Experimental Centre, Denmark.
