This book is about a Dutch Canadian Family post-World War II years. It includes the struggle of a North Holland village to survive Nazi occupation, harsh winters, and human selfishness; the difficulty of moving away from complicated family situations; the trip to Halifax on the Statendam; early farm and factory work in southwestern Ontario; the beginnings of a family tree nursery; an unsuccessful trip to seek funds from Dutch businesses in Chicago; and inter alia, the importance of education to this couple whose own formal education did not go beyond sixth grade. The Reformed tradition becomes the broader backdrop to the character's story.
