This 174-page illustrated paperback titled Creating with Shakespeare is filled with creative activities which senior high teachers can use to introduce students to Shakespeare's language, themes, plays, and sonnets. (Junior high teachers would also find it helpful.) The activities are set up to encourage self-exploration and creative involvement in finding personal meaning from Shakespeare's work in today's world. Chapter 1 has activities which look at the history of language, focusing on Beowulf, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. Chapter 2, titled Shakespearian Charades, gives scenarios to pantomime (action only) key moments from 10 of Shakespeare's greatest plays. The kids really have fun with this activity; it is a great motivator for the English-limited as well as gifted. Chapter 3 gives students play-by-play scene summaries from Shakespeare's plots and asks them to write their own dialogues to go with them. Chapter 4 takes the same scenes from Chapter 3, and this time supplies the original language for the students to read. Chapter 5 includes 10 short scenes from Shakespeare in the original language that deal with the supernatural, which the students are to perform with imaginative costumes, makeup, sound FX, and lighting. Chapter 6 includes short comedy scenes for performance in the original language with an emphasis on sources and devices of humor. Chapter 7 includes 9 sonnets for reading and analysis. Chapter 8 focuses on 9 soliloquies which eloquently state problems, viewpoints, or philosophies that continue to stir debate today. These activities are very engaging, and are especially good for students who find Shakespeare's language hard to understand. In addition to the strong emphasis on group communication skills, there are opportunities for journal and poetry writing and research as well. This approach enables a teacher to familiarize students with all of Shakespeare's major plays and sonnets without having to read each play in entirety.
