Book by Cribb, James

Although much has been written on the natural history of the Galapagos, the writing has concentrated on the land forms of plants and animals. In this heavily illustrated book, the emphasis is on the unusual marine life found in this area where cold and warm currents meet. The approach is informal; the author describes the types of life he photographs, recalling encounters with sharks, turtles, and dolphins. Although this is a tantalizing glimpse into a rarely-seen ecosystem, the coverage is not systematic and the book is more successful in its descriptions of the trials and tribulations of organizing an expedition in a remote Third World area. A good choice for libraries serving scuba diving enthusiasts; not essential for marine biology collections. Susan Klimley, Columbia Univ. Libs., New York, N.Y.
