The past is characterised by small isolated communities, their struggle and perseverance in a harsh climate, where fishing was the prime industry. The present is the result of confederation with Canada in 1949, where rapid economic development resulted in dramatic social change - industry and urbanization. The future could be the development of offshore resource industries. But characteristic of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, whose independence and self-determinaton has been nurtured by years of relative isolation, this province is seen here as a unique culture in a dramatic landscape.
