To learn to read and write successfully, children need a solid foundation of early literacy skills. Parents, the most important teachers in a young child s life, play a critical role in building these skills before their child gets to school. Speech-language pathologists Janice Greenberg and Elaine Weitzman have taken the most current research in emergent literacy and broken it down into fun, easy-to-use tips and strategies for promoting early literacy throughout the day. Filled with practical ideas, clear examples, and useful checklists, the I m Ready! guidebook helps even the busiest parent make early literacy-learning a part of every day. Taking a walk, reading a book, shopping for groceries... I m Ready! transforms all of these routines into enjoyable opportunities for parents to prepare their child for reading success.

As Director of Early Childhood Education Services at The Hanen Centre, Janice Greenberg has co-authored three guidebooks (Learning Language and Loving It™, ABC and Beyond™, and I'm Ready!™) and played a leading role in the development of their corresponding programs. Ms. Greenberg is also an experienced Hanen workshop instructor who lectures widely on the Hanen approach and provides training worldwide to speech-language pathologists and early childhood educators.
Elaine Weitzman, Executive Director of The Hanen Centre since 1992, is a speech-language pathologist and an Adjunct Professor in the University of Toronto's Department of Speech-Language Pathology. Over the last 30 years, Ms. Weitzman has contributed to the development of Hanen Programs, co-authored many Hanen guidebooks, and collaborated with the University of Toronto to conduct research on the efficacy of Hanen Programs and on caregiver-child interactions.
Greenberg and Weitzman's how-to book is as beautiful as it is useful. The thoughtful layout will allow parents to read the book differently each time: once for the illustrated examples; once for the highlighted tips; and once to learn more deeply about the strategies that promote language. Here, the use of acronyms makes it easier to remember these helpful strategies. Also, try-it-out outlines at the end of each chapter provide parents with an easy way to integrate and apply all that they've learned. As a researcher, I am truly impressed with Weitzman and Greenberg's tour de force - they were able to synthesize 30 years worth of research on early literacy and present it to parents in a fun and easy manner --Monique Sénéchal, Ph.D., Director of Child Language and Literacy Research Laboratory, Carleton University
This highly engaging book provides parents with numerous examples of everyday, practical strategies to help their children acquire the fundamentals of literacy and school success. With this book, The Hanen Centre, widely acknowledged for its outstanding language and literacy resources for teachers, tackles the school achievement gap in the most effective way possible - by giving parents the tools they need to prevent it in the first place. --Sue Bredekamp, Ph.D., Early Childhood Education Consultant
