"In the polyphony of voices we hear first of all the breaking of silence": so Robert Kroetsch characterises this anthology of prison writing in his foreword to it. From a doctor's account of his required attendance at executions, to prisoners' scribblings censored by the authorities, and an examination of women's experiences as detainees and visitors, this collection illuminates both the suicides and the sometimes equally desperate acts of daytoday survival that make up prison life. The panoply of voices gives us cause to revision time inside and those who are stuck doing it.
