An early enthusiasm for dance history led Rhonda Ryman to ballet training and the stage. Following French language studies at the University of Toronto and York University she enrolled in the York University Program in Dance where she completed graduate studies in kinesiology and dance notation. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo where she taught dance for 20 years.
Ryman's interest in the various "schools" of ballet technique initiated an intense ten year period of research into the complex and specialized language and terminology used to identify the ballet dancer's body movements.
Ryman's Dictionary of Classical Ballet Terms is an invaluable new reference to the contemporary classical ballet terminology in use today by ballet teachers, choreographers and students the world over.
Packed with detailed information in a large print format, this Dictionary is tailored to busy professionals. An easy-to-use guide, it will quickly become a friendly companion to the day-to-day work in the dance studio.
This Cecchetti dictionary of ballet terms is the second part of a comprehensive work which will include the Vaganova and Bournonville schools. Ryman's RAD Dictionary ws published in 1995.
Author Rhonda Ryman's survey of the dance literature spans the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Enrico Cecchetti's personal, handwirtten Manual, dated 1894. Ryman studied the extensive notation scores of various ballet syllabi enabling a detailed comparison of the structure of each ballet movement. Consultations with teachers and dance practitioners from across the world added significantly to updating her database--positioning this Dictionary in a contemporary time frame.
In compiling this remarkable resource the author brings together her broad experience as a dancer and ballet teacher, as well as her practial knowledge of the French language, the movement sciences, notation systems and pedagogy. As a result, Ryman has assembled definitions of ballet terms in precise work descriptions along with pronunciation guides. Many definitions include historical notes and goal nuances in the application of terms.
An indispensable source for dance professionals and an intriguing read for ballet afficionados and dance history specialists ... a new bench mark in the ballet lexicon.
