(from Chapter Three: Conducting the Daily Writing Workshop)
Starting with Modeled Writing.
In modeled writing, you compose in front of the class to demonstrate print-text conventions and writing skills. You can use the blackboard, an easel, or an overhead projector. You will think aloud, talking to the children about the things you consider as you compose. For example, to model wrapping text, you might write two sentences about a picture of your writing. You might say, "Whoops, I'm at the end of the paper and I didn't finish what I was telling. Where shall I continue my writing?"
Draw, write and memorize your models before it's time to use them . Use the spaces provided throughout this book to create them. Tab their pages to find them quickly. Eventually, you will want to create a collection of models for all your demonstrations and lessons, keeping them in a notebook, arranged by genre or skill. As an additional source, use transparencies of student work that demonstrate the use of a skill. Ask your colleagues to collect good samples and to share them with you. Keep these in your notebook.
