June Biermann and Barbara Toohey, whose numerous books (e.g., The Diabetic's Book , LJ 3/1/90) have inspired many newly diagnosed diabetics, join a renowned diabetologist to focus on issues faced by the diabetic man. They suggest diabetes is either "Type U" or uncontrolled, or "Type C" or controlled, with control being not only desirable but the only way to sidestep the well-publicized but avoidable complications of this chronic disease. In a lively, conversational format, the authors reassure and help the diabetic man gain control of his life through careful management. Medicine, nutrition, sports, sex (impotence being a particular concern), and traveling are all discussed. Women will find this book helpful in learning how to support the diabetic man or male child in their lives. Highly recommended.
