From Library Journal:
New Englander Hubbard is not so much a traveler as he is a visitor: he drops in on people in out-of-the-way places and stays with them for a while, photographing them and taking notes. He is fascinated with traditional culture and rustic ways, and this book is a glorification of the simple and uncrowded life. Hubbard is essentially a photographer, and the book is full of stark but striking black-and-white photos of bleak landscapes and leathery faces. The text, too, is stark. We don't as readers really get to know these people out on the edges of civilization, but we do get a warm and romantic feeling about them. A lovely book for larger public libraries. Harold M. From Publishers Weekly:
With a camera and a backpack, Hubbard traveled in search of people relatively untouched by modern culture. PW admired the text and the "magnificent" photographs.
