Grade 5-8-Shifting from adult recovery literature such as Each Day a New Beginning (Hazelden Information Education, 1996), Casey called upon memories of her own painful childhood as an aid in constructing a year's worth of meditations for girls. There is a Christian emphasis, but also a recognition that everyone's idea about God is different. An effort is made to address American Indian concepts about the Great Spirit. A wide variety of quotations can be found from the likes of Mary Pickford, Rose Kennedy, Hannah Senesh, Madeleine L'Engle, Jane Fonda, and Joan Didion. Many are uncredited. Beneath each saying is a journal-like entry about a related problem in the life of an adolescent girl, followed by a resolution for that day. Concepts range from "We all have bad hair days" to "Who is God and where?" There may be small selections about which to quibble but overall this gentle, kind offering promotes self-improvement, assuring both "normal" girls and those who are locked in dysfunctional situations that they can make changes, belong, and find purpose in life.
