Grade 4-5-- Matthew spends a summer exploring caves, learning sign language, and solving a boat robbery at the local marina. The writing is brisk and has a slightly sophisticated humor about it that will be appreciated even by young readers. The dialogue is realistic, and the characters are adequately fleshed out, if slightly idealized. Lessons abound--deaf people are like other people, adults should listen to kids, etc.--but the adventure is enjoyable, nonetheless. The pen-and-ink illustrations are flat and sketchy, and are something of a distraction. One major plus is that a deaf girl who is one of the main characters isn't treated as a novelty.
