There is something here for every reader: male or female, gay or straight, black or white, etc. For that reason, the work should have been twice as long; as it stands, specific appetites are whetted but never satisfied. Here and there, one finds genuine nuggets: Charles Bukowski's booze-washed ode to "wife no. 3 or 4," an on-the-money cartoon by Lynda Barry, and Ron Wallace's sweet tale of bedtime stories, in which the child fails to grasp the big words but gets mad when Dad tries to explain them. But on the whole, most libraries would be better served by a subscription to co-editor Sklar's innovative journal The Spirit That Moves Us .
