The EDITOR'S CHOICE series was established in the light of much wonderful work going unnoticed and unread due to the small circulation of most small independent literary presses and magazines. Our aim is to bring to readers work they may otherwise never come across, and bring to the authors, a wider audience.
(Editor) Morty Sklar decided to publish the first EDITOR'S CHOICE (it wasn't planned as a series at first) when he and a writer friend read an anthology that professed to be the "Best of the Small Presses," but which looked to us to be engineered for commercial success (or as commercial as poetry, short stories and essays can get). The list of founding editors, contributing editors and nominating publishers was impressive, but the work was for the most part boring or ordinary. My friend, Jim Mulac and I set out to get the best work we could find. Although we hoped to get an occasional piece by a well-known person or/and publisher, and we did get plenty of that, our main criterion was that we respond strongly to the work. EDITOR'S CHOICE III, and EDITOR'S CHOICE II (co-edited with Mary Biggs) continued in this vein. We hope our choices give you pleasure and inspiration.
