This reprint of a 1935 ground-breaking research study designed to make museums more effective places of learning anticipates contemporary debate on the subject. It is the first published report to measure the effect of the museum visit on groups of elementary and middle school students and to recommend offering a range of museum experiences to accommodate variables in the students' educational levels, cultural backgrounds, and the teaching styles of the science museums in this study. Although science museums are the study sites, the findings and models are useful to most museums. Contains sample verbal and written materials, activities, and tests given to the fifth- through eighth-grade students in the study.
