Excerpt from the Foreword: There is an irresistible urge for syngraphists-those who collect and study paper money-to collect error notes. errors can tell stories that well-produced notes do not, which makes this facet of the hobby especially interesting. For instance, many errors relate the trials-and heartaches-of the printers when they break in new preses. Others depict the problems that occur during production, not so much on the presses, but during the manual handling and inspection that must occur. Errors in U.S. currency printed since 1929 are very infrequent, considering that over eight billion currency note are now being printed each year. The quality control at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is extremely good. But the rarity of errors should not be the sole reason for collecting them. The stories behind the errors add to our knowledge of all notes, and piecing those stories together is often akin to solving a mystery.
