Maritime dogs from days of old, the Labrador developed thick double coats impervious to water. Like that of an Otter, the Labrador Retriever also has webbed feet and thick tails which helped them steer and maintain their balance when they swam through the breakers. Earliest records have them imported to England in the late 1700's. They werefirst recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1903, and were imported to the United States shortly after World War I where they became popular on the estates of the wealthy in Long Island and north along the Atlantic coast.
