An office building is a living, vibrant community. It is filled with humor, pathos, eccentrics, peculiarity and the bizarre. The tenants are in some ways influenced by the building itself and a family in many ways. They may be impersonal, reclusive, passive, or remain strangers but most are gregarious, interacting, sharing and revealing of themselves to the others they share the building with.
Set in the 1960s, when the author had a small office in The Granite Building, we meet Judy, a young beauty who always seems to be in the center of many problems, and Foster and Ed, a couple of sharp lawyers that get the best of the computer that keeps sending bills to fully paid accounts. Dave and his mom sometimes throw more than hash in the local eatery and Pat is always ready to offer advice on the stock market. And of course there are Tom, Dick and Harry, the custodians who enliven the building's atmosphere. Each is quite different and unusual, especially Dick who spends his weekends attending funerals that he selects as "interesting" from newspaper announcements.
As the author relates, "The only consistent thing I have found is that there is always a little humor in sadness and a little sadness in humor. One just has to look for it."
