Book by Derry, Alice

This satisfying first book effectively employs a variety of current poetic techniques. Derry writes chiefly of relationships remembered, filtered through time and presented against a backdrop of rural imagescarefully constructed scenes in which things in nature become fresh analogies for the ways people behave toward one another, where reluctance is like "a taut branch snapping back after it's let go." The poet handles tough material, such as the scars of war, with equal sensitivity. Introspective, contemplative, awed, and bewildered by memory, Derry wants to infuse ordinary events with monumental implications. Sometimes the tone slips from profound to pedestrian, but the lapses in style are always in the interest of substance.Leonard Kniffel, Detroit P.L.
