Walter Mandela Lomax served 39 years in the now-closed, violent Maryland State Penitentiary (nicknamed The Cut) for a crime he did not commit. Lomax wrote extensively poetry, fiction, essays and eventually became the editor of the prison's monthly magazine, The Conqueror. Collecting several of Lomax s essays from his seven-year editorship Monster in the Maryland State Penitentiary, his earliest (1972) extant work, a number of short pieces from 2004/05 and other later reflections on his experiences following his release in 2006 - the work shows a thoughtful seriousness for his and others who find themselves members of these communities situation and predicaments.

About the Author:
In his native Baltimore, during the racially supercharged months following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Walter Mandela Lomax was convicted, via inept defense counsel and erroneous eyewitness testimony, of the felony-murder of a local store owner.

In late 2006, thanks to Centurion Ministries and the Innocence Project, Lomax's case was reviewed. The presiding judge ruled that he had been wrongly convicted and set him free. Since then, Lomax has been active in local and regional community work. In prison, however, he was also a community activist, editing the prison magazine The Conqueror and mentoring younger prisoners, who re-named him Mandela. Presently, he divides his time and his work between Greater Baltimore and Virginia. In March 2008, he was featured on a panel at the national Split This Rock conference in Washington, DC, along with Clarinda Harriss, his editor, and several west coast scholars of prison writing.
