About the Author

Though one of her early goals for life was to be an illustrator, Roberta Labastida received a Multiple Subject Credential with a supplementary in Art, from San Diego State University in 1981. She enjoyed teaching the lower primary grades, but Kindergarten was her favorite. While teaching at Mountain Empire Unified School District she co-authored, with Diana Caldeira, two Kumeyaay curriculums: “The Kumeyaay People” and “The Kumeyaay: Secrets of the Trail” (with Diana Caldeira and Candy Anderson). These were funded by a Title IV grant in cooperation with the Campo Reservation. The Barona Reservation was asked by the SDCOED to fund the publishing of the books to be used for their Kumeyaay Curriculum. The curriculum was taught to teachers at workshops, conferences and in services. Mrs. Labastida has shared her Kumeyaay artifacts collection and knowledge with various parks, libraries, and organizations. She realized that the young students didn't have any picture books to learn about the Kumeyaay so she decided to write and illustrate three big books: Come With the Kumeyaay, for the Kindergarten, Kumeyaay, Kumeyaay, for the first grade and My Kumeyaay Village (now My Ancestors' Village) for the second grade. These were given to all of the schools in MEUSD and to the Campo Reservation Education Department as gifts. She retired in 2003 year to devote herself to more writing, illustrating, and archaeology work. Mrs. Labastida joined the San Diego Archaeology Society, The San Diego Fine Arts Museum, The Bancroft House Historical Society, the Anza Borrego Foundation, the San Diego Museum of Man, The Imperial Valley College Museum, and was trained as an Archaeology site steward and completed the Archaeology Certification Training Program for volunteers at the Colorado Desert State Park, (Anza Borrego, Cuyamaca, Palomar).
