Synopsis
Simon has done an excellent job of assembling a set of essays that discuss strategies for helping children with language problems to be more successful in school. The most valuable feature of the book is its emphasis on the critical importance of teaching communication in the regular classroom. The book shows how teachers often do not really teach communication skills, but rather assign practice exercises in oral speaking, reading comprehension, or writing, all under the assumption that essential skills are already acquired. That assumption is denied in this book, where the emphasis is clearly on improving teaching techniques in the classroom.
