If Only My Belt Could Speak
The only item that Sammy had after surviving the Jewish ghetto, the two concentration camps, and liberation was a skinny belt that he found in a closet in the Deblin concentration camp. This item became very special to him and he has it to this day. He says:
I asked myself, "Why is this belt made of durable leather broken?" I am sad that it has not lasted. It is my friend. It is the only physical item that I have left from childhood in camps . . . in Nazi concentration camps.
Come look at this belt. It speaks! It speaks of the growling pain of hunger in a child's thin tummy. It speaks of sights it has seen and feelings it has felt on others. Oh, little belt, keep talking. Thank you for being with me and for holding my shabby, torn pants as I made it through those dark days.
