Plantation life takes on new meaning in Liz Tucker s delightful memoir of the days when her young family lived at Limerick Plantation, near Charleston, South Carolina. Even if you weren t raised on grits, the stereotyped vision of the antebellum South of white-columned mansions, mint juleps and Rhett Butler is eclipsed as we romp through a time described by Liz as a delectable slice of life when each day bubbled with excitement. Liz invites you to join her at Limerick to enjoy story after story of her young and eccentric family, which included her husband, a.k.a. The Saint, her four individualistic children and constant guests, who looked on in amazement as a seemingly unending cast of wild and domestic critters congregated on The Patio. In addition to the eponymous Pig of the title, Wilbur (until he s the main attraction at a barbecue), there are coons in the cupboards, cows in the cornfield and calves in the doghouse, plus the usual golden retrievers so necessary to a lifestyle where

Liz Tucker describes herself as a deeply rooted transplant to the Lowcountry, one who moved from Louisville, Kentucky, in her youth. After she and her husband raised four children at Limerick Plantation in the wilds of Hell Hole Swamp, Liz ran a tour company, Creative Expeditions, which specialized in conducting heritage tours for museum groups, including the Smithsonian and the National Trust. She found that the stories she told about her family s rather unorthodox life at Limerick made the educational component of the tours fun, and it was at the urging of her tour participants that she committed her stories to paper. A grandmother of four, she currently has possums on her patio, which overlooks the tidal creeks and marshes near Edisto Island. She asks in wonderment, How many fun lives can one person live in one lifetime? I am on at least the fourth!
