Reviews

If strapping on a heart rate monitor and heading out for a bike ride sounds a bit extreme, you may have some catching up to do. Maffetone, a sports physician, and Mantell, a sports writer, have demystified the heart rate monitor (HRM) for athletic training. Available through bike shops, athletic stores, and mail-order catalogs, HRMs are rated from simplest (and least expensive) to those with costs matching the price of a good bicycle. Case histories, statistics, and data on the use of the HRM come primarily from bicycling, although swimming and running are covered briefly. The authors assume no prior knowledge, explaining sports physiological theories behind training methods. Strategies for training, racing, and rehabilitation are outlined step-by-step utilizing charts and diagrams. For public and academic libraries with interest in bicycling, swimming, running, and triathalons.
