Synopsis
The Grand Canyon Railway cannot be considered a simple spur line from Williams to the Grand Canyon. A panoply of interrelated events have combined to make it what it is today. This milepost guide will give the reader some insight into its history and surroundings, as well as a description of the points of interest to be seen along the right-of-way keyed to the railroad mileposts. Also covered are the geology of the area, photo locations, and the wildlife and plants and trees which can be found on or near the route. Chapter 3, which is the guide itself, is printed in larger than usual type so it can be easily read while the train is in motion. Each description will tell the reader about the natural or human history pertinent to that location. It’s a good idea to read ahead and watch for anything that is of interest. Lastly, the history of the rebuilding of today’s Grand Canyon Railway with detailed descriptions of the company’s motive power and rolling stock adds to the narrative. [Revised Edition]
