Smith, Ken. Decoys and Other Stories. Confluence Pr., dist. by Kampmann & Co. 1985. c.50p. LC 85-071132. ISBN 0-917652-53-3. $16.95; pap. ISBN 0-917652-52-5. $8.95. f Questions of identity predominate in the six tales of Nigg's new collection. In the title story, a middle-aged suburbanite gains a sense of life's greater possibilities by contact with an elderly vineyard owner. In ``Snow Fish,'' two men attempt to recover a lost part of themselves through a winter trip to the Colorado Rockies. Nigg's characters are believable as they move from quiet isolation to engagement with a deeper sense of self. However, a number of the stories are marred by stiff writing. Decoys is more fully realized. Smith uses his experiences as a Southwesterner and Vietnam veteran as background to these tales of ranchers, Mexican-Americans, and ex-soldiers. In ``The Things We Know,'' a marriage falls apart as both partners realize their lives will never be what they had hoped, and in many of the other stories a sense of emptiness and loss fuels the anger of Smith's characters as they battle to a stalemate with life. An emotionally powerful collection. Lawrence Rungren, Bedford P.L., Mass.
