In this collection of 46 photographs, Czech-born Ickovic captured many moods of his homeland and of Hungary, both freshly liberated from communism. Some of these memorable black-and-white images convey joy, hopeful anticipation, and celebration of the new era--animated faces of the young at rallies, workers at a car factory, President Havel's dance at a gala. However, more somber, reflective images prevail. Deserted streets of Prague, lone figures in front of deteriorating buildings, a group of old men sitting around a table, and statues of saints on a village bridge convey a strong sense of a place where time stood still for four decades and where the future is uncertain. This is recommended for public and academic libraries.
