Nicomachus of Gerasa (c. 60 – c. 120 CE) was an important mathematician in the ancient world. His treatise on harmonics exhibits characteristics of the Pythagorean school of music, particularly in Nicomachus’ assignment of number and numerical ratios to notes and intervals, his recognition of the indivisibility of the octave and the whole tone, and his notion that the musical consonances are in either multiple or superparticular ratios.
