Synopsis
The 250-plus units of today’s California State Park System are grouped into several different classifications, each of which is managed to best preserve its values and serve its visitors. State Parks contain outstanding scenic, natural, cultural, or ecological values; Wildernesses retain their primeval character; Reserves have outstanding or unusual natural or scenic values; and Historic Parks preserve places and objects of statewide historic significance. Several kinds of parks are devoted to Recreation Areas, Vehicular Recreation Areas, Beaches, and Wayside Campgrounds. Any of the parks might contain a Natural Preserve – an area of natural or scientific significance sometimes containing rare or endangered plant species, or unique geological or topographical features. This guide is your invitation to adventure. You’ll learn about the history and natural attractions of each park, and discover the best places for camping, fishing, boating, hiking, and picnicking.
