Hardlines offers a fascinating look into how perceptive children really are about their world. Hardlines features 67 social commentary linocut prints created by children. The children's art is the product of a national artist-in-residence program, Artists & Communities: America Creates for the Millenium. This book contains linocut prints from participants ages ten through adult who worked with artist Richard Mock of New York City during a summer residency at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, North Dakota. The themes presented in the artwork represent social commentary about present-day issues, personal points of view, experiences or memories. They are universal issues that affect all our communities as well as our world. Hardlines is also a great educational tool for teachers, printmakers, parents and humanity.
The book is 96 pages, soft cover black and white, and perfect bound; an excellent conversation starter for people of all ages.

Our community was fortunate to host Richard Mock as a guest artist. He and his assistant, Robert C. Crowe, skillfully nurtured participants to think deeply about the world around them and to illustrate their thoughts through the technique of linocut block printing. The two successfully brought out the best in the youth and adults. This book is a testament to the insights and creativity of the participants.
When a cut is made in the linoleum it cannot be anything else except that cut. So just as in life, the child learns that once a choice is made, they have to accept its reality and incorporate it into life's pattern, just as with the pattern created on the linoleum. In this way, art making and mental development are part of the same exercise and produce in the child awareness of the collective wholeness of life on earth and in the print.
