Synopsis
Outdoor recreation can expose the hiker, climber and paddlesport enthusiast to hazards and danger. Even the most careful parties can run into situations that produce temporarily disabling injuries. Mobility can be impaired by fractures, sprains and by other physical injuries that leave victims unconscious and unable to evacuate themselves. Assess the situation carefully. Assume responsibility for your own evacuation when absolutely necessary. Discover unusual techniques for evacuating litter victims. Use common camping equipment to improvise carrying devices. Make litters from pack frames, webbing poles or blankets. Carry litters properly. Pass litter cases over obstacles. Instruct others and understand instruction better with the help of this book.

Buck Tilton is director of the Wilderness Medicine Institute, Inc., in Pitkin, Colorado, advisor to Western State College's Mountain Rescue Team, co-author of Medicine for the Backcountry, author of many magazine articles on wilderness medicine and rescue, member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and a member of the American Medical Writers Association.
