Elizabeth Jones and John Nimmo are members of the faculty of Pacific Oaks College, Betty in human development at Pasadena, California, and John in human development and education at Pacific Oaks Northwest in Seattle, Washington. In the course of graduate work at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, John, an Australian, became interested in Reggio Emilia and became part of an ongoing research team focusing on children’s collaboration.

Emergent curriculum in early childhood education is not new. There have always been classrooms in which the curriculum took shape week by week and day by day, with the teachers thoughtfully making plans that drew on the children’s interests and activities rather than mapping out everything months in advance. But it was not until 1970 that Betty Jones introduced the term emergent curriculum (in her introduction to the NAEYC publication Curriculum Is What Happens, edited by Laura Dittmann). Having a concise, apt phrase to describe such early childhood programs has proven to be very helpful.
