This is the second in the critically acclaimed Left Bank Book series published from 1991 to 1996 by Oregon's Blue Heron Publishing. Each title focussed its collection broadly around a theme, i.e., the collections in the series: Writing & Fishing the Northwest; Extinction; Sex, Family, Tribe; Gotta Earn a Living; Kids' Stuff; Head/Waters; Pursuit of Happiness; and Secrets. The series was recognized for elegant prose, fine art, an intriguing range of literary approaches by both established names and exciting newcomers--from Ursula Le Guin to Ken Kesey, in the first case, and from Robert Stubblefield to Chuck Pahlaniuk, in the latter. As the title suggests, there's ubiquity to the disappearance of things. Many kinds of things and ways of thinking and doing. The contributors to Extinction include: Barry Lopez, David Quammen, Tess Gallagher, Richard Nelson, Robert Heilman, Sallie Tisdale, William Woodall, Robert Michael Pyle, Nancy Lord, Barbara Drake, Peter Douglas Ward, Lynda Sexson, John Daniel, John Callahan, and Christopher Harris. For the cover, which was initially a template created by Portland graphic designer Marcia Barrentine, a striking woodcut by Portland artist Jack McClarty was acquired, and McClarty kindly allowed his work to be digitally deconstructed so that elements might be used throughout the book.
