Personal and business histories combine to tell why Pittsburgh has been the focus of so many important industries and events. Many of the artifacts illustrated are drawn from an accompanying exhibit at the Pittsburgh Regional History Center.

About the Author
Paul Roberts is former editor of Western Pennsylvania History magazine. He has since built and operates Deep Creek Cellars winery, and has written about his experiences in From This Hill, My Hand, Cynthiana's Wine.
